Can I choose which loved ones in spirit come through in my psychic medium reading?

You can pray to the loved ones in spirit who you’d like to show up for your reading with a psychic medium and request that they be there, but there are never any guarantees. Psychic mediums are like telephones to the spirit world without a dial. They can pick up the phone and see who is there, but they can’t dial directly to any one spirit.

Can I prevent certain people in spirit from coming through in my psychic medium reading?

You can certainly ask people in spirit (before a reading) to not show up at your reading with a psychic medium. But, no, you really can’t prevent spirits from showing up.

On more than one occasion, I’ve witnessed an ex-husband’s mother show up hoping her daughter-in-law (who was getting the reading) would pass a message on to her the ex-husband (the spirit’s son). I’ve even seen departed relatives of a sitter’s neighbor arrive at the reading hoping the sitter would share a message with his or her neighbor. It’s not common that this happens, but it does happen more often than you might expect.

Think about what it must be like for people in spirit. They want their surviving loved ones here on the physical plane to know they are okay, but their loved ones might not be noticing the signals they’re sending, might never consider going to a psychic medium, and might not even believe that spirit communication is real. Just imagine how frustrating that must be for people in spirit.

But then, suddenly, their son’s ex-wife or their daughter’s next-door neighbor visits a psychic medium. Wouldn’t you possibly try to get a message through if it was important enough to you, especially if you knew it might be your only opportunity?

Another rather typical unwanted guest to a psychic medium reading is when an abusive parent, relative or spouse (now in spirit) shows up for a reading pleading for forgiveness when the person getting the reading wants nothing to do with him or her. These are difficult situations for everyone involved. And it’s cases like these when you realize that spirit communication isn’t all about you.

Even though you paid for the reading with the psychic medium, spirit communication also holds benefits for those in spirit. So if someone you know who has died needs to tell you that they are sorry for something they did or said to you, it might be equally important for you both that this message gets through (even if you don’t think you want to hear it). You aren’t required to forgive them, of course. But it can be healing (however slight) to know that they are sorry for their actions.

The best thing to do when a spirit shows up who you would rather didn’t is to simply not resist the message. Let the message come through so that the reading can move on to another spirit. From my experience witnessing this type of situation in live psychic medium demonstrations from stage, if you waste time telling the psychic medium that you don’t want to hear from that spirit, it’s unlikely to change anything and will only waste time. Some people in spirit will distract the psychic medium until they get their message through. So let what needs to be said be said and then move forward. You might actually discover that the message you get is exactly what you need to hear. And, don’t forget, you get to talk back and say whatever you want to say to them, as well. That’s one of the greatest benefits of spirit communication—it’s a two-way communication, not a monologue. And you can just talk right out loud to the person in spirit and they’ll hear everything you have to say.
