The Differences Between Psychics, Mediums, Channelers & Divination Readers

By Bob Olson

Within the field of psychics and mediums, there are many specialties. In this article, we will explore what distinguishes them, where they overlap, and what abilities might determine one’s particular specialty.

What Are Psychics?

Psychics, also known as intuitives, receive messages from Universal Energy, what some people call the quantum field, which includes your personal aura (energy). This ability is best used for guidance around life issues and direction.

The primary purpose of psychics, in my opinion, is to confirm to us what our own intuitions are telling us in order that we learn to trust our inner wisdom. If a psychic can help us do that, they’ve done a wonderful job.

What Are Mediums?

Mediums (often called psychic mediums because they are both psychic and mediumistic) receive messages from spirits, including our deceased loved ones and our spirit guides, ascended masters, and angels. A medium’s ability is best for spirit communication.

The primary purpose of mediums, in my opinion, is to provide evidence that our deceased loved ones are in spirit and are at peace in the afterlife. In this way, mediums help comfort and heal our grief, and they teach us to not fear death.

It is often said that all mediums are psychics (meaning that they have both abilities), but psychics are not mediums (meaning they have only psychic ability). This always seemed correct since psychic mediums are gifted to receive both psychic and mediumistic messages. However, in the last decade of my research, I’ve come to recognize that this discrepancy between psychics and psychic mediums isn’t entirely accurate.

Due to the popularity of mediumship (spirit communication) in the last decade, I know dozens of psychics who have become excellent mediums as well. So evidence suggests that people who have psychic ability have a predisposition for mediumistic ability too. However, this doesn’t mean that all psychics will be good at spirit communication. In fact, it’s equally true that not all mediums are good at using their psychic ability either. Most people tend to be better at one or the other.

Think of psychics and mediums the same way you might think of lawyers and tax lawyers or general physicians and cardiologists. You can certainly go to your family lawyer about your taxes, and he’ll be able to help you to a point. But you’d get better service regarding your taxes if you went to a tax lawyer. In the same manner, you could go see your general physician about your heart. But if she thinks you need more specialized knowledge, she’s going to send you to a cardiologist.

Well, that’s the difference between psychics and mediums. If you want information that comes from energy (guidance, direction, predictions), go to a psychic. If you’re seeking spirit communication, go to a medium. It’s that simple.

What Are Channelers?

Channelers (sometimes referred to as channels) are basically mediums with a specialty. They focus on communicating with spirit guides, ascended masters, and angels.

Traditionally, channelers channel messages from advanced spirits, usually to communicate spiritual wisdom about life and the afterlife. Many channelers work with the same higher-level spirit or a group of spirits their entire life. Jane Roberts, who channeled the Seth books, communicated with Seth, for instance. When communicating with a group of higher beings (often called nonphysical entities), channelers commonly refer to them by one name, such as Abraham, the Group, the Committee, or the Council. Paul Selig, who channeled The Book of Knowing and Worth, simply refers to his group as his guides.

If you’re seeking to communicate with deceased loved ones in spirit, you’ll want to use a medium. If you want to communicate with one or more advanced spirits for universal wisdom, you’ll want to use a channeler.

What are Intuitives, Empaths and Sensitives?

Intuitives, empaths, and sensitives are basically all the same, which is that they are people with a highly developed psychic ability. Some psychics use these alternative terms to label themselves because they feel the term more accurately describes their ability—such as an empath feels what other people are feeling. Others use these terms as a way to market themselves differently and stand out from the crowd, rather than just calling themselves a psychic.

What are Divination Readers?

Divination readers use tools to give psychic readings and tell your future. The most common divination tool in the United States is the tarot deck. Other tools include tea leaves, runes, I Ching coins, crystals, crystal balls, scrying mirrors, pendulums, spirit boards or talking boards (Ouija board), and dowsing rods.

Divination is typically not about spirit communication; therefore, mediums generally don’t typically use them in readings of spirit communication. Divination is more about using tools for psychic readings and future predictions. While some divination readers depend on their tools of choice and use them strictly, intuitively gifted divination readers merely use their tools as a guide to get their intuition stimulated.

In the end, if you’re seeking direction in your life, go to a psychic (or divination reader). If you’re seeking to communicate with a loved one in spirit, go to a medium. And if you’re seeking higher wisdom from advanced spirits or groups of spirits, go to a channel (aka channeler).
